The governance gap below $50M

Larger companies have boards: independent directors with real operating experience whose job is to challenge the CEO’s thinking before a bad decision becomes an expensive one. Almost no business under $50M has anything close to this. A formal advisory board feels like overkill, or simply out of reach financially, for a business this size.

What actually fills the gap (usually nothing)

In the absence of a board, most owners default to informal sounding boards — a spouse, an accountant, a friend in a different industry. These people care, but they rarely have the specific operating experience to meaningfully challenge a strategic decision, and they often have a personal stake in keeping the relationship comfortable rather than pushing back hard.

The cost of unchallenged decisions

Strategic decisions made without genuine challenge tend to reflect the owner’s existing assumptions rather than test them. Pricing decisions, expansion plans, hiring calls for senior roles — all of these benefit enormously from a credible outside voice willing to say ‘I think that’s wrong, and here’s why’ before the decision is locked in.

A board-level perspective, without the board-level cost

Savjet’s Business Mentoring Program gives owners of sub-$50M businesses something functionally similar to an advisory board seat, without the cost or formality: direct, ongoing access to an experienced CEO or MD whose only role is to bring honest, experienced challenge to your thinking. No personal stake in the outcome beyond seeing you make the right call.

What owners get that they didn’t have before

It’s the single perspective most owners of growing businesses are missing — someone with genuine operating credibility, no emotional investment in protecting your ego, and the experience to know which of your assumptions actually deserve to be challenged.
